Airlines capitalize on this trend with "stopover" programs, some even offering free hotels and food. Airlines have jumped on this growing trend with built-in "stopover" programs, which can come with free or discounted hotels, excursions, transportation, and food at the layover destination. Several tailwinds that have not been in place for a decade now make the Brazilian mining giant Vale SA too attractive to ignore, according to Goldman Sachs. Goldman upgraded Vale to buy on Tuesday and raised its stock price target by 60% to $19.50, implying nearly 25% upside from the stock's $15.65 close on Monday. Goldman forecasts iron ore prices of $110 per ton next year and estimates that Vale is internally pricing in a $104 per ton price. "We believe the story is now too attractive to ignore and investors will slowly increase exposure as confidence around iron ore supply/demand balance in 2024 increases," analyst Marcio Farid wrote. The investment bank also expects ongoing policy support in China The key downside risks are weaker-than-expected iron ore prices in 2024 and less policy support in China to back up its ailing property market, according to Goldman.

The Amazon jungle is the world’s largest rainforest and its protection is seen as vital to curbing climate change. “It’s an impressive result and seals Brazil’s return to the climate agenda,” said Marcio Astrini, head of advocacy group Climate Observatory. Still, this year’s deforestation rate remains nearly twice that of the all-time low in forest destruction in 2012 and far from Lula’s pledge to reach zero deforestation by 2030. Under the right-wing former president, destruction at the hands of ranchers, land speculators and miners surged to a 15 year high. The official annual period is measured from August to July as there is less cloud cover in the middle of the year to obscure deforestation on satellite images.

A Brazilian carbon market would be an important addition to an expanding network of cap-and-trade systems around the world. Brazilian agricultural producers and miners hope the carbon market will help overcome headwinds in developed markets where consumers often associate them with deforestation. Exporters of manufactured goods using Brazilian grains, meat, iron-ore and other raw materials could also get a boost if carbon regulation improves the country’s environmental credentials, according to Brazilian business executives. Sen. Tereza Cristina —a former agriculture and livestock minister—defended the decision to exclude the sector from carbon regulation. “The farm sector isn’t ready for the regulated carbon market,” she said.

"Exports have been the major warning point for the automotive sector in the first nine months of the year," it said. According to Anfavea, the crisis in Argentina caused the country - which has in Brazil its largest trade partner - to lose its position as the No.1 destination of Brazilian auto exports to Mexico this year. In the first nine months of 2022, Anfavea said, auto exports from Brazil have already declined 11.2% from the same period a year ago.

BELEM, Brazil, Aug 10 (Reuters) - Amazon rainforest nations emerged from a summit this week with a stronger hand to play at upcoming United Nations climate talks, despite the meeting's lackluster final agreement, according to environmental groups. Lula will take that message on the road this year at the G20, United Nations General Assembly and U.N. COP28 climate summit. But he also applauded the symbolism of the eight Amazon countries meeting together for the first time in 14 years and joining their voices with the world's other major rainforests. BELEM, Brazil, Aug 8 (Reuters) - Eight Amazon nations agreed to a list of unified environmental policies and measures to bolster regional cooperation at a major rainforest summit in Brazil on Tuesday, but failed to agree on a common goal for ending deforestation. The failure of the eight Amazon countries to agree on a pact to protect their own forests points to the larger, global difficulties of forging an agreement to combat climate change. Bolivia and Venezuela are the only Amazon countries not to sign onto a 2021 agreement among more than 100 countries to work toward halting deforestation by 2030. But tensions emerged in the lead up to the summit around diverging positions on deforestation and oil development. Fellow Amazon countries also rebuffed Colombia's leftist President Gustavo Petro's ongoing campaign to end new oil development in the Amazon.

Unwashed coffee is so-called because its fruit is left to dry whole before the bean is extracted. He added that relatively little Brazilian coffee ends up in ICE warehouses because it usually fetches higher prices in the physical markets. The two companies declined to comment on whether they had got a mix of semi-washed and unwashed beans certified by ICE. Zooming out to inflation adjusted terms however, coffee prices in 1980 were equivalent to about $8 per lb - a whopping 500% higher than they are today, according to Reuters calculations.

The committees said several hundred of the 2,500 Ford plant jobs will be filled by CATL employees from China who will be in charge of setting up and maintaining equipment. Senator Marcio Rubio on Wednesday asked the Biden administration to investigate Ford Motor Co's (F.N) plan to partner with PT Vale Indonesia (INCO.JK) and China's Zhejiang Huayou Cobalt in a $4.5 billion nickel processing plant in Indonesia. Indonesia, which has the world's biggest nickel reserves, has been trying to develop downstream industries for the metal, ultimately aiming to produce batteries and electric vehicles. Vale and Huayou began construction of the plant in November and commercial operation is expected to start in 2026. He had already asked the Biden administration to review the deal to use technology from CATL. Rubio wants to block tax credits for electric vehicle batteries produced using Chinese technology, in a bid to prevent Chinese companies from benefiting.

SAO PAULO, April 7 (Reuters) - Deforestation in Brazil's Amazon rainforest rose 14% in March from the previous year, preliminary official data showed on Friday, highlighting the continued challenges for the new leftist government. President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva took office on Jan. 1, pledging to end deforestation after years of surging deforestation under his predecessor Jair Bolsonaro, who slashed environmental protection efforts in the Amazon. Space research agency Inpe's data showed 356 square km (137 square miles) were cleared in the Brazil’s Amazon just last month. Washington announced at the beginning of the year it intended to contribute to Brazil's Amazon Fund, which supports conservation projects in the jungle region. Norway also pledged its support last month for Brazil's efforts to attract additional donor countries for the Amazon Fund.

You’ll have much better luck finding an open elliptical machine than a bench press, squat rack or 30-pound dumbbells. The pandemic led more people to take up weight training, gym owners and industry experts say. Post-pandemic, the surge in the popularity of weight training has helped the gym industry recover. Paul/Fairfax Media/Getty ImagesThe arrival of Nautilus and Universal strength training equipment in the 1970s and 1980s made weightlifting more attractive to a broader range of people. Genesis clubs have added more squat and dumbbell racks to keep up with demand for strength training and downsized cardio areas.
Scientists discovered the fossilized brain of a vertebrate in a 319-million-year-old fossil. The rare finding offers new insights into the evolution of extinct bony fish related to the salmon. The finding suggests a more complex brain evolution pattern, allowing researchers to define better "how and when present-day bony fishes evolved." Researchers believe the extinct ray-finned fish would have been about six to eight inches long, and its brain and associated nerves are roughly an inch long. The ancient fish is on loan to scientists from the Manchester Museum in England.
